One of the most important of the Biblical tribes was Ephraim, son of Joseph, the "birthright tribe" (1 Chron. 5:2). In ancient Israel, the holder of the family birthright was accorded many privileges, including receiving a double portion of the inheritance and the right of family rulership. Yet there has been little consideration of how these privileges were fulfilled in the history of the tribe of Ephraim.
This important tribe gave its name to the ten-tribe composite nation called the House of Israel (Hos. 5:3-14; 6:4; Ezk. 37:16-19; etc.), and in subsequent history we find that prophecies which were given to the tribe found fulfillment in the entire ten tribe nation.
For example, the prophetic blessings by Jacob (Gen. 49) and Moses (Deut. 33) both stated that Joseph – and by implication the descendants of his son Ephraim – would be a "separate" people. This saw fulfillment when the nation of Israel divided into two parts: the northern ten tribes of the House of Israel, and the southern two tribes of the House of Judah.
This separation between the two Israelite Houses was more deep and long lasting than is commonly assumed. Interesting evidence is presented that the two Houses had different language dialects as well as differing alphabets and other cultural differences between them.
Associated with the tribe was its namesake city, Ephraim. This town became lost to history and was only relocated in modern times. The importance of its discovery is often overlooked, for it not only played a part in Old Testament history, but our Savior spent several weeks there while awaiting the appointed time of His crucifixion. His visit was no accident, and a dozen significant parallels exist between the ancient city and Biblical prophecies concerning the House of Israel.
